Build your work opportunities by taking advantage of free training

Working in the skilled construction trades requires a deep knowledge of the craft as well as safety and productivity standards.

If you’re one of our members, you know how robust our apprenticeship program is because you’re either part of it or have completed it. But if you’re in the latter group, do you take advantage of the free opportunities our union offers to upgrade your skills?

Through the Southern District Training Trust Fund, SRCC members can access training that will keep you up to date on rapid changes taking place in industries across our region. This free, ongoing training makes you marketable to many employers.

“New technology, new processes, new tools — we offer those classes in our facilities for the journeyman upgrade,” said Jimmie Jordan, executive director of the Southern District Training Trust Fund.

Jordan has worked for years both as a millwright and as an educator. He knows just how important union training is for workers, both in terms of work quality and in having dignity and a say in your job.

“I believe it’s because of the Brotherhood, being part of the organization and having the buy-in to be proud of the work and the training you receive,” Jordan said.

Now is a great time to let others know about the debt-free path to a well-paying career that our union offers. Spread the word to your friends, family, and acquaintances that they can earn while they learn.

“Someone with no experience is fine,” Jordan said. “All they need is a good attitude and willingness to work. We usually do a week of (in-class) training per quarter on average. Along with that, we track their on-the-job training, and that’s how we advance them through the program and how they become more proficient and skilled.”

As always, the apprenticeship program is free. And the resources available to apprentices are also available to journey-level members. The Trust Fund works with employers to keep all our members trained on safety standards and equipment.

This training is what makes union jobsites and workplaces safer than non-union ones.

It also gives employers peace of mind that the job will be done right the first time. And that translates into more work opportunities for you.
